Embedded Business Intelligence
The definition of this varies, depending on whose brochure one is currently
reading. Even BI professionals can be somewhat confused. The simplest
definition is that BI elements are integrated (embedded within) operational
business processing, and typically into a third party application.
For instance, a report or an analysis is shown at the time of entering an
on-line transaction within application X. As with many such simple statements
it can hide complexity as typically:
-
this is more event driven and requires close to real time updates of BI
information (a non trivial task)
-
integration is a technical task requiring developer resource
-
integration adds complexity, risk, cost and reduces robustness
-
there are hidden costs with licensing.
On the positive side, one can significantly improve the quality outputs
of operational processing.
