Your first data warehouse pilot
BI initiatives often seem to start in one of two ways. Either everyone agrees
it’s a good idea but is not sure what to do, or a pilot is kicked off with
great fanfare but nothing seems to eventuate. A first pilot must be carefully
chosen.
-
You want to demonstrate that you can have an impact on the bottom
line, or attack a noticeable pain point in the organisation – therefore the
pilot must have just such a clear and agreed aim.
-
You need users who are willing, nay passionate, participants who
have some clout.
-
Avoid having to construct the entire technological infrastructure as
this can be a significant investment.
-
There is a big learning curve – do not be scared to get expert help.
-
Try and avoid conflicting aims (and political issues) by staying
intra departmental.
-
Avoid the temptation to achieve too many objectives.
-
You will need a budget & project management.
